Here is my Workshop Schedule for 2011.

You will love my book, Encaustic With a Textile Sensibility, which is a "gallery between pages" exhibiting the work of 23 artists working in encaustic-not a how-to-book. It will become a show at the Kimball Art Center in Park City, June 4-July31. I teach for R and F Paints , on the West Coast, WaxWorksWest, near Santa Cruz, and independently. I'll be teaching a 2 Day Encaustic Workshop for Fiber and Textile Artists
at the Surface Design Conference/SAQA Reinvention Conference
at San Francisco State. The Dates are March 22-24.
The class is limited to 12 students

Also a 3 day Class in April 15-17 at ZIJDELINGS in Tilburg, The Netherlands.

I always include a talk, entitled Encaustic with a Textile Sensibility during these workshops.

What you'll learn:

Safety
Supports and grounds
Compatability of Fiber and Wax
Creating smooth or textured surfaces
Xerox transfers
Collaging various materials
Imbedding objects
Line and edge
Working on paper
Dipping
Poured surfaces

Materials to Bring:

Plywood panels, up to 8" x 8"-baltic birch is best
your local cabinet shop will have scraps, and will gladly give to you.

Bristle or natural hair brushes. You can get cheap ones at hardward stores in the paint dept. (synthetic brushes will melt), two or three flat (hake, 1”,2”) or other small flat brushes, and two or three small rounds.. I prefer the split shank Hake brushes. Utrecht has very good ones.

Mark making tools: dental tools, ceramic trimming tools, palette knives, pin tools, etc.

Basic artists tool box: scissors, single edge razors, (utility blades), pencil, masking tape or blue painter's tape, roll of waxed paper (for wrapping finished work), ruler or straight edge, painting clothes or apron.

Sketchbook for notes

Collage materials: xerox prints, drawings, small pieces of handmade papers, small pieces of wire or hardware cloth, thread, yarn, fabric, small metal objects to imbed.

Students having a blast at Whidbey Studio

This was an August Class at the Whidbey studio. Jan liked the class so much, she came back for a second time, and brought her daugher Summer with her!

Christy and Briget have been best friends since they are 12, and will do a marathon together in Athens in November!

Jan made a really cool cast plaster heart which she brought to class. She painted it and did a lovely xerox transfer. Even Mrs. Lewis, my high school jewelry teacher (who never let us do hearts, would have approved)!

As a beginning encaustic student, I found Daniella's intelligent and careful explanation of the health and safety issues very helpful and reassuring. She capably demonstrated materials and equipment handling as
well as many techniques for preparationand artful application of wax. She has agreat sense of humor which served her well as new students attempted to imitate her deft handling of the tools and materials. Her class was not only interesting and informative, but we had fun learning from Daniella who is not only a skillful artist but an excellent teacher as well.

I signed up for Daniella's workshop hoping for a brief
creative interlude. A chance to dabble in something
fun and interesting. But without commitment in mind at
all.

But as soon as I got my hands on the brushes and hot
wax I was hooked. In the past with any art-making
endeavors, I've been totally fixated on the end
product. As a result I'd been stifling myself for fear
of messing things up! Or doing the wrong thing. With
Daniella I learned that there is no wrong thing. And
that the beauty of art can be in the mystery of the
process and the unpredictability of the outcome. And I
learned to love that about it. And to be less attached
to the outcomes.

Daniella's style is both engaging and informative. She
covered a vast amount of information in a way that was
totally understandable and digestible. So I didn't
feel overwhelmed.

And while I don't get to practice encaustic painting
as much as I'd like to, I do carry a sketch book and
think about it all the time. Someday I'll have my own
little studio. In the meantime, I'll take more of
Daniella's workshops!

all of it. The energy is surging. Truly, I need to figure out a way to set up and
